Ginger Anne Sandell was raised on the mainland. In her youth, she spent hours exploring nature, roaming the forests of Maryland and the rolling hills and tidal pools of Southern California. In 1974, she traveled to Hawaii on vacation. She fell in love with the ocean and the beauty of the islands, so she sold all her possessions and moved to the Big Island. Her love of nature inspired her to begin painting in 1979. Ginger loves pristine places in the natural world. She hopes to inspire her viewers to cherish the exquisite splendor of the earth and strives to show this beauty with her art.
As a single mother of four sons, Ginger postponed her art career to pursue an education in business. She earned a Bachelor’s in Business, a Master's in Business Administration, obtained her Certified Public Accountant credential, and then started her own CPA firm in 2004. With the same determination she used to raise her boys, Ginger refocused her skills toward her true passion of painting, which lead her to enroll in the Academy of Art University. She earned her Masters of Fine Arts in December 2019 and retired from her CPA practice in 2020. Now she works as a self employed artist and has exhibited in Hawaii, New York, California, and Miami. She has been jured into local and international exhibits.
Ginger was primarily self taught until she enrolled in the Academy of Art in San Francisco in 2011. Ginger paints in an expressionist, painterly realist style where line, color, and form may vary from the more realistic portrayal of the world. Her collectors have told her that her art is “other worldly”. She hopes that the visual image will connect with people emotionally. Her paintings often have a sense of tranquility; however, there are others that show darker emotions. When she paints she loses track of time. Painting is her meditation and she believes that it brings her in contact with her Higher Power. Art and creativity are both a tactile and spiritual experience for Sandell.
Her paintings can take a few hours or a few weeks to complete. Plein air pieces are painted alla prima and usually finished within a three to four hour time frame. Studio paintings take much longer. It is impossible to really estimate how long a painting will take to complete because each creation is a unique experience. She paints wet on wet; however, she usually works for three to four hours at a time before allowing the paint to dry in between painting session. This layered technique helps her build depth, translucency, and rich color variations.
